This year-long elective course is for 9th to 12th grade students who are interested in playing the steel drum, the newest acoustic instrument invented in the 20th Century. Students will learn how to play several songs on converted oil barrels in a full orchestra of steel drums. This course will allow students to experience the tropical sounds of the islands of Trinidad & Tobago. These sounds include repertoire from the traditional genres of Calypso and Soca as well as Classical and Pop standards. Students will also learn about the history of the instruments and how they are built and tuned. An adequate musical background including the ability to read sheet music and learn rhythms quickly is highly recommended. Directed by Jason Lee Bruns.
